Healthy snack ideas for your children

As parents, grandparents and guardians, I feel we have a big responsibility on our hands to raise our children strong and healthy. However, pretend to be in their shoes walking in the aisles of a grocery store and seeing all the tempting items such as candies, cookies, chips, soft drinks, pastries, ice creams and the list goes on and on. These temptations are hard enough for us adults to resist. If we introduce kids to healthy foods and good foods at a young age, hopefully they will continue the trend of watching what they consume and eat healthy as adults.

I feel the more sweets and sugar items the children eat, the more they seem to crave them, so please try to limit your children's daily sweet intake .

Below I have listed some healthy snacks you may want to try.

Fresh fruits: apples, bananas, strawberries, peaches and grapes

Unsweetened applesauce or fruit cups

Peanut butter on whole grain crackers or breads with raisins or banana slices

Fat-free pretzels or various baked chips

Celery filled with peanut butter or fat-free cream cheese

Salsa with baby carrots, broccoli or bell pepper strips

Low-fat cheese and low-fat crackers

reduced-fat yogurt and low-fat milk

Whole grain breakfast cereal with low-fat milk

Hard boiled eggs

Gram crackers

Homemade oatmeal raisin cookies are the best choice for eating cookies

Fruits smoothies with low-fat milk

For healthy lunches, consider:

Chicken and green bean salad with a light dressing

Hummus with whole grain bread sticks

Veggie, chicken noodle soup or tomato soup

Egg salad sandwiches on whole grain bread

cheese quesadillas made with fat-free flour tortillas with fat-free cheese and chopped spinach

Lettuce, tomato slices and possibly turkey or fat-free ham sandwich

Baked corn chips dipped into taco filling mixture with lean ground beef or turkey topped with fresh tomatoes

Don't forget about the 10th annual Easter Parade at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in downtown Parkersburg. There is no charge for floats, so if you would like to be in the parade, you can get an application at Chick-fil-A, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, or online at MovEasterParade.com or on Facebook Mid-Ohio Valley Easter Parade.

There will also be an Easter bonnet contest for kids of all ages, everybody is welcome to decorate a hat and bring it to the Pottery Place at the Grand Central Mall to be judged. The dates are: April 2 for toddlers (4 years and under) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; April 3 for elementary/middle school ages (K-8th grades) from 3-5 p.m.; and adults can drop off their bonnets on April 3 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and April 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Judging will start at 6:30 p.m. with winners announced at 7 p.m. Kids will parade around the food court after judging.

Peanut Butter-Apple Wraps

3/4 cup creamy peanut butter

4 7-inch whole wheat flour or spinach tortillas

1 large apple, finely chopped

1/3 cup shredded carrot

1/2 cup low-fat granola without raisins

1 tablespoon toasted wheat germ

Spread peanut butter on one side of each tortilla. Sprinkle each tortilla with 1/4 apple, carrot, granola and wheat germ. Roll up tightly; cut each wrap in half. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Stanley Sandwiches

1/2 cup shredded carrot

2 tablespoons reduced-fat ranch salad dressing

1/2 focaccia

3 lettuce leaves

6 ounces thinly sliced reduced-fat deli-style roasted beef, roast chicken or roast turkey

Stir together carrot and salad dressing. Cut focaccia into 3 pieces. Split each piece horizontally. Place lettuce leaves on bottom halves. Top with meat. Spoon carrot mixture on top. Top with remaining focaccia halves. Wrap in plastic wrap.
