Three new books serve as an “ode” to dogs!

In “Nothing But a Dog” by Bobbi Katz and illustrated by Jane Manning (Dutton, $16.99) a little girl longs for a dog. There is nothing else that will do - not a squirrel or a parakeet or a bunny or a kitten. Not checkers or skates or flying a kite. Not even a grown-up bike will help. The little girl dreams of waking up to a cold dog nose and a dog greeting her coming home from school, and playing in the snow and cuddling at night. And finally, one day, her dream comes true. This is a sweet story with lovely illustrations about the love of kids and dogs. It is for ages 4 to 8.

Puppies’ names make up a fun alphabet and poetry book, “Name That Dog!” by Peggy Archer and illustrated by Stephanie Buscema (Dial, $16.99).

Each dog, from A to Z, is named, with a short poem describing the dog’s personality and also tells what type of dog each is. There’s Aspen the Labrador Retriever, Fank the Dachshund, Ghost the West Highland White Terrier, Puddles the Scottish Terrier, and so many more. But the final poem in the book reminds kids that whatever name they give their dog is the perfect one. The illustrations are very fun and the poems are cute. It is for ages 3 to 5.

A funny poodle tries to work for a baker in “Pantaloon” by Kathryn Jackson and illustrated by Steven Salerno (Random House, $17.99).

The baker needs help, but thinks Pantaloon would eat more than he’d bake. Pantaloon tries a disguise, but is discovered. But when the baker falls and hurts himself, Pantaloon steps in to save the day. And the baker soon realizes maybe he was a helper after all. This yummy book makes the reader hungry for some of the sweet treats inside the bakery, and is a sweet story about a helpful dog. It is for ages 2 to 5.
