Welcome to new school year

September 21, 2017 - Amy Phelps
So how did the first day of school go? Does everyone feel like they have their school year schedules figured out? My kids have started their sixth year at an online school. My youngest is thrilled to get my oldest’s favorite teacher as her homeroom and social studies teacher. My oldest even got to talk to him on the phone for a while when he called to talk to the youngest about the school year. She was reassured by his experience after graduation — not sure what he wanted to do as a career, worked for a while and then went back to school. She isn’t sure what she wants to do yet, so we’ve been discussing jobs, and possible college courses, or taking a gap year and working and then going to college. We found out this summer after talking to my oldest’s guidance counselor, that she has enough credits to graduate early, so long as she takes senior year Language Arts. So she’s getting a double-dose of literature, which she’s OK with. But that means she’ll be graduating, which is mixed emotions for me — happy she’ll be done with school (I was a good student but hated school) and sad because my baby will be graduating! Come graduation time I’m sure I’ll be more emotional. And my youngest can’t help but remind me that she’s right in the middle of middle/junior high. Yes, I know girls. You’re growing up and I’m old. Stop reminding me! Hope your school year is off to a great start!
