Video Game Madness

April 11, 2017 - Amy Phelps

I have a confession to make - I recently became a videogame-o-holic. My oldest saved up her money from mowing lawns and Christmas and birthday, and bought a Playstation 4. She also got several games from Black Friday. One game she got was Until?Dawn. It is basically a horror movie where you are making decisions for the characters and trying to help them escape. Maybe I should also confess I like those kind of movies? Most people of my age-group remember growing up with Nintendos and Segas. I had an Atari and that was it until my high school graduation, where I took the money I had saved up and bought a Playstation. It quickly became clear that the only games I could really play were fighting games like Tekken and for some reason, SSX Tricky, a snowboarding race game. Everything else I failed miserably at. I had to watch other people play because I couldn’t steer the car/character properly and would somehow end up stuck in a corner. But watching Until Dawn was different. It was basic steering and pushing a button to trigger a reaction. I could do that! I quickly played the Telltale Games series: The Walking Dead, (and cried through the ending!) Wolf Among Us and started Batman, though it didn’t quite hook me like the others. I discovered how horrible the season pass truly is, waiting for new chapters. And I’ve expanded as well. My husband had a XBox, and my two quickly became obsessed with the Bioshock series. After spending too many nights hearing the action going on and saying, “What ARE you playing?” my oldest finally convinced me to play, saying she’d help me when I got stuck. And I quickly burned through those two, though the last one wasn’t the same at all to me. Now, my friend and his wife are playing Fallout 4, and after hearing the fun they had, I decided to try it for myself. And it is fun! So far I’ve been able to move around, though a few times I’ve heard, “Mother what are you doing? Why are you shooting at the sky?” and there is a lot of pushing buttons for reactions which I can easily do! Now when’s the next chapter of Walking Dead out?
