I Am Mom Hear Me Roar

May 9, 2016 - Amy Phelps
It’s Mother’s Day! Have you ever stopped and thought about all of things you could never imagine yourself doing until you became a mom? Like dealing with a sick kid with the stomach flu. Being the spider killer. Functioning on less than 3 hours of sleep. And, as they get older, dealing with teenagers. Recently, I convinced my oldest to let me put makeup on her for fun. By the time I was her age, I wore makeup (though I quickly got tired of doing it and it became a special occasion kind of thing.) She didn’t mind the foundation. And that’s about it. She didn’t want to open her eyes for the mascara and with eye liner, I kept repeating, “You’ve got to open your eyes. Open your eyes!” She kept saying I was going to poke her in the eye. It was a fun dance of back and forth as she tried to get away and I tried to move in. Finally, I added eye shadow - she really didn’t mind that part - and it was done. I showed her my handiwork. “It’s too bright,” she said, of the green color she had picked out. “My eyes itch. It’s going to smear.” She’s definitely not a makeup person. So that was probably her first and last time of it. She’ll be able to get her driver’s permit soon. She’s looking forward to it, but is nervous. And that will be another thing I could never imagine myself doing - teaching someone how to drive. I’m not the teacher type at all. But I’m going to do it anyway. Because I’m a mom. And that’s what we do.
